AMD 1

Ich habe das erste fier Sätze im Roman “Der Prozeß” bei Franz Kafka gelesen und uebersetzt.
“Jemand mußte Josef K. verleumdet haben, denn ohne das er etwas Böses getan hätte, wurde er eines Morgens verhaftet.”
“Somebody must have libeled Josef K., because without having done anything wrong, he was arrested one morning.”
“Die Köchin der Frau Grubach, seiner Zimmervermieterin, die ihm jeden Tag gegen acht Uhr Früh das Frühstück brachte, kam diesmal nicht.”
“The cook of Ms. Grubach, his landlady, who brought him breakfast early at around eight everyday, did not come this time.”
“Das war noch niemals geschehen.”
“That never happened again.”
“K. wartete noch ein Weilchen, sah von seinem Kopfkissen aus die alte Frau, die ihm gegenüber wohnte und die ihn mit einer an ihr ganz ungewöhnlichen Neugierde beobachtete dann aber, gleichzeitig befremdet und hungrig, läutete er.”
“K. still waited for a while, from his pillow saw the old lady, who lived across from him and who was watching him with a curiosity rather unusual for her, but then, disconcerted and hungry at the same time, he rang.”
Dies Absatz hat mich irritiert, aber mein Übersetzung probably ist nicht so gut. Ich weiss nicht die Konnektion zwischen K.s verhaftung und daß die Küchin nicht kommen. Haben die Polizei der Küchin dass K. verhaftet war gesagt?
Neue Wörter:
Böses tun = to do bad/evil things
Kopfkissen = pillow
Ungewöhnlich = unusual
Neugierde = curiosity
Beobachten = to watch

Willkommen!!

Welcome to our class blog!

We will be using this blog throughout the semester for two kinds of assignments:

1. Once per chapter, the homework plan will direct you to post a response to the culture readings for the chapter on the blog.

2. Roughly every other week, the homework plan will direct you to post here for your Abenteuer mit Deutsch (AMD) assignment. First you do
a fun activity that involves German, then you post about it. You should spend an hour total on this (maybe 45-55 minutes doing something, 5-15 minutes posting about it). See Was ist ein AMD, AMD Ideen
and Beispiele for ideas. This should get you excited about the kinds of things you can do!

Whenever you post something, please include your name and the name of the assignment (e.g. AMD2, Kultur5) as labels. See "Blog: How To" for more details!

AMD 1

Ich habe mit meine Freundin in Vienna gesprochen. She lived with my family in high school as an exchange student. We talked in German about our families, school, and work. It was actually very difficult to keep myself from switching to English, mostly because it was difficult to structure sentences. One topic we talked about was the holidays, comparing Austrian culture with American culture on how people celebrate Christmas and New Years. It was good to practice speaking German in an informal setting, and to get help from someone who speaks fluent German!

AMD 1

Für meine AMD ich habe gesprochen mit meine freund auf Deutsch. Throughout the conversation I worked on the Wechselpräpositionen and reminded myself of some of the vocabulary from the earlier chapters. One of the biggest limits to conversing auf Deutsch was not the grammar, but the vocabulary; it wasn't as hard to remember how to construct sentences as it was to remember the words I wanted to use. This made me think about talking auf Deutsch in a different way.

AMD 1

Für mein AMD 1, ich habe in Deutsch ferngesehen. Ich anschaue die Show "How I Met Your Mother". In die Episode, Lily und Marshall haben schon getrennt und Lily jetzt wohnt in San Francisco. Ted und Barney versuchen zu hilft Marshall weitergeht, aber es nicht arbeit. Ich fernsehen diese in Deutsch gern, denn es habt die Show sehr interessant anschaue gemacht.

AMD 1

Für meine AMD habe ich spiele in www.spiegel.de gelesen. Ich habe fotos von Handball gesehen.

In this article, I saw the word "damit" a lot, which is a new word from this Kapitel. Der Artikel sagt, dass das Deutsche Mannschaft gegen das Spanien Mannschaft in Barcelona gespielt hat. Germany and Spain tied (ein*zehen) in the quarterfinal match in the Handball tournament.

Then, I read this article about the USA soccer team in German on the same website. Das USA Mannschaft muss gegen das Ecuador Mannschaft spielen. The USA team is significant to Germany because the coach of the USA team is Jürgen Klinsmann, who is German. Das USA Mannschaft spielt das Ecuador Mannschaft am 29. Mai. Das USA Mannschaft spielt der deutschen Nationalmannschaft am 2.Juni in Washington in der USA. The German team plays in America one other time, Miami to be specific.

Also, at the end of each article, there is a link to the Speigel Online Facebook page, which I checked out and "liked" out of consideration and because I like these articles.

AMD 1

For this AMD post I chose to do a dialogue based activity so I could have some more practice speaking German. One of my roommates is in German 231, so I thought she would be a good choice to practice with. We went to lunch together today and decided to speak only in German. It was tough at first but as I got more used to it, it began to feel more natural. We talked about our class schedules, what we did over the long weekend, and other typical roommate topics. I told her that I had just learned two-way prepositions, so we tried to use those in conversation too. It was really helpful talking to someone who I feel really comfortable with in German. And since she is more familiar with the language with me she was able to point out things I could improve on. Overall, it was a really fun experience and we decided that we should try and have German speaking lunches before every test for a fun way to prepare.

AMD 1

I decided to change the language for one of the computer games (RUSE) I play from English to Deutsch. There were a lot of the words we haven't learned like: Kampagne = campaign, Kämpfe = battles, and Mehrspieler = multiplayer. There were some that we have learned like zurück. There is a mission called Colditz Castle, and in Deutsch its Schloss Colditz. The characters that are American and British sounded weird speaking Deutsch but it sounded much more natural to hear Germans speaking German. It was still fun to play but was hard to understand since most of the words they said we haven't learned yet.

AMD1

Für meine zuerst AMD habe ich Deutsch Musik gehört.
I listened to deutsche Weihnachtslieder, although Christmas is long passed.
One of the songs I immediately recognized and understood many of the words was Silent Night or "Stille Nacht." I recognized words or sayings such as "alles schläft"
Zweiten Lied ist "Jingeling"  or "Jingle Bells" I recognized words such as "Schnee" or snow
Beide sind gutes Lied!
Das drittens Lied war "Weiße Weihnacht" or White Christmas
While listening to this song I understood the word Angel "Engel"
 Dies ist mein Lieblings- Weihnachtslied!

AMD 1

Ich habe die Informationen für studieren im Ausland nach Deutschland gelesen. Ich möchte von Mai bis Juni dieses Jahres nach Berlin zu gehen. Es gibt etwas Touristeninformation Websites. As I looked through the websites, I found something we've learned and are learning, such as Wenn Sie Ihre Kleinanzeigen lieber faxen oder per Post senden wollen, können Sie die hier zum Download angebotenen PDFs als Vorlage nutzen, which is a typical example for the wenn-clause, as well as the dative preposition "zu". The wenn comes at the beginning of the sentence, making the verb "können" of the main clause preceding the subject, and the verb coming to the end in the subordinate clause. And the two-way preposition "in"- Fische suchen(search) Fahrräder ab sofort(immediately) auch in unserer neuen Online-Community! I assume in this case, it's dative.

There is quite a little information and tips for travelling in Berlin. There is one website that has a introduction to Berlin in winter. I used to think that Berlin's winter must be terrible due to the weather, but the video did change my view. The whole city is white and silver, even shining on the sunshine. Peaceful and cheerful. It's a pity that I'm going to miss the winter, but I think the spring won't let me down either.

Here are some of the websites: Nachtleben in Berlin,Parties, Clubs and mehr in Berlin,Tipps zu Freizeitgestaltung in Berlin, http://www.visitberlin.de/de

AMD1

Fur AMD1, ich habe den Deutsche Film "Lola Rennt" gesehen.  I have seen this movie before in the past, but decided to revisit it hoping my experience with German would allow me to depend less on the subtitles.  Ich habe viele Worter verstehen.  At times the dialogue moved too quickly for me to keep up, but contextually and with an improved understanding of German verbs and cases, I was able to follow things much more successfully than in the past.

Lola hat Rote haare, und sie schriet oft.  Manni ist ein Verbrecher. In dem Film, Manni hat seine Tasche verloren. Lola und Manni brauchen viele geld jetzt.  Dem movie ist so lala, aber nicht schlect.  Du kannst der Film am Youtube gesehen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaD9HKbn5nY).

Neue Worter:
ich will nicht weg - I don't want to leave
schwanger - pregnant
das ist kein witz - this is not a joke
halt die klappe - shut up

AMD 1 - Lucas Junginger

For this AMD, I've decided to listen once more to Rammstein's album "Mutter". I have already done this for an AMD at the beginning of last semester, but I would like observe how I have progressed.

Listening to this again was very exciting. I kept the both the German lyrics and its translation side-by-side as I listened. I found that I was able to understand the lyrics solely by translating nouns and verbs. Sentence structures, including the cases, were surprisingly easy to contextualize and understand.

Even sentences in different tenses were somewhat understandable. By knowing the helping verb werden, the future tense is easy to figure out.

I found also that numerous verbs and nouns auf Deutsch were incredibly similar to their English synonyms. Some examples are:

das Licht
- the light
das Herz - the heart
die Sonne - the sun
die Faust - the fist
die Phantasie - the fantasy

fürchten - to fear
scheinen - to shine
verbrennen - to burn
fühlen - to feel

One phrase I liked very much was: Ich will in Beifall untergehen.
Rammstein has always made music that speaks to me; the irony being my complete lack of understanding. It's definitely an awesome experience to come back to these songs and have a completely different set of tools with which to enjoy them.
