Kultur 11 - Andrew Baker
I thought these articles highlighting the regional differences between parts of Germany were very interesting. It seems like the perceptions of North and South in Germany sort of mirror our own here in the States. As for the articles on the differences between East and West, I thought the information here was extremely interesting. I didn't realize that there was still this cultural divide that existed between the inhabitants of Berlin. I remember seeing quite a bit of Soviet and DDR memorabilia (some old, some newly produced) for sale in the former East Berlin when I was there in 2004, but assumed most of it was for tourist consumption. It has to be strange for the generations before mine as well as those who were very young when the wall fell to reconcile the two societies they have lived in. I especially enjoyed the quote in the Ostalgie wiki, "To the statement of the interviewing journalist that "GDR inhabitants did not have the freedom to travel wherever they wanted", Germans replied that "present-day low-wage workers do not have that freedom either."

AMD 6 - Andrew Baker

viele Monty Python Videos. Sie sind sein
Liebling.

Kultur 10 - Andrew Baker
I found a couple of these articles pretty interesting. I've also never heard of this "Dinner for One" movie, but I did get a kick out of the "Sound of Music" part at the end. I think it was President Reagan who had that song Edelweiss played for the Austrian ambassador at some reception and the ambassador just looked at him like he was crazy, having no idea what the song was. I also thought the Father's Day article was pretty funny considering how tame our celebrations of that holiday are in this country. As for the "Sorry, We're Closed" article, I don't know how I'd be able to handle that. I'm annoyed enough at the amount of businesses that close on Sunday in the US, so to deal with it to that extreme would probably drive me crazy.

I thought the author of the "Welcome to America. Take a Number" article had some really great points. It's frustrating to hear the word socialism abused the way it is in this country by people who lack a clear understanding of what it is that socialists advocate. After what we read early in the year, I would gladly trade my financial situation for that of a German student. I also found the article on German patriotism very interesting. I didn't realize it was so taboo there. I suppose I can see why, but think enough time has passed where they can begin moving past the 30's and 40's. Considering the strength of their economy, among many other things, I guess I'm just surprised more people aren't proud to be German.

Die Band is Dropkick Murphys.

I found the two health-related articles to be the most interesting for this assignment. One of them I found myself being able to relate to, and the other was a practice that would absolutely drive me crazy. After reading the Draftofobia article, I immediately realized that the Germans would see me as a major offender. I absolutely cannot stand not having moving air when I'm traveling, especially in the car. I'm the kind of person who keeps the window cracked for circulation even through the winter months, and without it I feel uncomfortable and claustrophobic. As for the mysterious illness article, I definitely understand the German's aversion to overusing medicine. I'm also incredibly wary of antibiotics, and many studies have shown that our overuse of them in the States is leading to more virulent and drug-resistant strains (interesting article on The Guardian about this a few weeks ago http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/jan/23/antibiotic-resistant-diseases-apocalyptic-threat).
Also, after reading about the affordability of life for college and university students in Germany I have to admit, I'm a little jealous.

AMD 2

When reading the Bargain Buys article on Der Spiegel, I noticed some similarities between this German shopping experience at Aldi's and the American experience at Aldi's. Much like in a German Aldi grocery stores, you are required to pay a cart deposit, most food is still lined up on pallets in the aisles, the produce isn't always the freshest, and many of these stores require you to bag your own groceries at the cashier as well. However, the often bizarre off-brand food is priced about as competitively as possible and, when money is tight, can be worth it. It seems as if these stores are much more popular in Germany, however, as there isn't the same overcrowding issues, the no-holds-barred checkout style, or the imposed linear path through the same stores in the States.
Also, I quite enjoyed the article What Discipline?: Of German Lines and Pythons. It was interesting to read considering the stark contrast between line etiquette in the States compared to Germany. Violating normal queue protocol is such a taboo thing to do here, I imagine it must catch a lot of people from other countries off guard when visiting. I especially enjoyed the author's suggestion that sometimes simply throwing a tantrum is the best way to deter people from cutting in front of you.

AMD1
Fur AMD1, ich habe den Deutsche Film "Lola Rennt" gesehen. I have seen this movie before in the past, but decided to revisit it hoping my experience with German would allow me to depend less on the subtitles. Ich habe viele Worter verstehen. At times the dialogue moved too quickly for me to keep up, but contextually and with an improved understanding of German verbs and cases, I was able to follow things much more successfully than in the past.
Neue Worter:
ich will nicht weg - I don't want to leave
schwanger - pregnant
das ist kein witz - this is not a joke
halt die klappe - shut up
