Kultur 11
I find all the cultural implications the Berlin wall made even after coming down very interesting. When learing about the ordeal in US history back in high school, the subject of the Wall is quickly passed over as just another event in Germany's wild history. However, focusing on it more I find that it is just too interesting to spend so little time on in class. The fact that a wall was built to separate two halves of a city is just unreal. Although I'm not surprised, it was interesting to read about the stereotypes easterners and westerners hold against each other. Even more interesting is that before the wall, there WEREN'T easterners or westerners, really. They were and still are all of the same city.

AMD 6

AMD 5

Kultur 10
I liked the article on Christmas in Germany a lot. First and foremost, I now consider Germans to be among some of the braver of the world's people. Why? For their apparent affinity for fruitcake. Here, fruitcake carries the long-standing reputation of being akin to that of a squishy brick of less than appetizing fruit-chunks. It's quite possible that fruitcake over in Germany is different (and hopefully better) than it is here, but on the off chance that it is the SAME horrendous dessert, I commend the Germans' spirit and dedication to Christmas time. The aspect of all of the wooden huts set up during this time seems pretty neat as well. I remember taking a field trip in Deutsch 2 in high school to Chicago for some German related Christmas time activities, and we visited something much like what is described in the article.

The "Love Thy Neighbor" article was extremely interesting to me. Here, at least from what I've noticed, neighbors don't necessarily change just to accommodate other households. Instead, they compromise and every one pitches in just a bit for the better of all, and that effort really helps to make for a better sense of community (at least in my neighborhood, that is). For less cooperative and more grumpy neighbors, like Mr. Birtles down the street *cough*, we just feign a smile and pretend to like them and they do the same for us. To me it seems that in the US it is a lot less my-way-or-the-highway than in Germany, and real problems don't arise from matters as simple as weeds on the sidewalk. It's a little ironic how many see Americans as "sue-happy", yet it's commonplace for Germans to take neighbors to court over what seem to be such trivial things. Some laws they've implemented are pretty great, as well (i.e. the once per month barbecue rule, which in my neighborhood would be violated on a weekly basis in the summertime).

Kultur 2 - Nathan Tran
What I found most interesting was the Kultur text about the draftophobia. I now know that I could never use public transportation in Germany. I'm one of those people that always has the windows rolled all the way down in my car, so i'm afraid locals wouldn't like riding on a hot bus or train with me. Even in the summer, I decide not to use the air conditioning (partly because I have this weird notion that it saves gas) because I like how a nice breeze feels. Also, on a side note it makes my hair super sexy by the time I've reached my destination. Telling this to a person native to Deutschland, I'm sure they'd be surprised at how resilient my American immune system is, fighting off the many ailments they feel drafts are responsible for.
